Soufrière is a town on the Southwest coast of Saint Lucia in the West Indies and was the original capital. Home to one of the world's "drive-in" volcanoes, Soufrière also has the Diamond Botanical Gardens, home of the Diamond Waterfall, ancient mineral baths, and the black sand beaches of Anse Chastanet.
The Gros Piton and Petit Piton rise up from coral reef beds that have made the region popular for snorkeling and scuba diving. The town is reputed to be the birth place of Napoleon's Empress Josephine de Beauharnais. Although this fact is disputed by historians, it is known that the Empress spent much of her childhood in the town on her fathers plantation.

Water taxi's are a main source of income for many locals and can be a much quicker, convenient and picturesque method of traveling short distances to private beaches or coastal towns. Many water taxi operators in the Town of Soufriere can be found at the jetty. The rates of these drivers are a little high and can be bargained down. There are a few taxi owners who regularly play dominoes and sell drinks near the hummingbird hotel and Soufriere beach, they can offer a much cheaper rate. From Soufriere, you can take a water taxi to Anse Chastenet and Jalousie Beaches.
